MTN Ghana introduces biodegradable SIM cards as part of major sustainability push

MTN Ghana has unveiled a new generation of biodegradable SIM cards, marking one of the most concrete steps by a major telecom operator in West Africa to cut down on plastic and electronic waste. The announcement came during the company’s 2025 Sustainability Week launch at MTN House in Accra, where executives positioned the innovation as a direct response to rising environmental concerns.

Patrick Afari, MTN’s General Manager for Supply Chain Management and General Services, said the new cards are made from forest-certified, eco-friendly materials designed to break down naturally without harming the environment. Even the metal components, typically the least sustainable part of a SIM card, have been engineered to degrade safely.

Afari stressed that environmental friendliness does not compromise performance. He noted that the new SIM cards meet all standards for reliability, durability, and user experience while helping reduce the volume of long-lasting waste produced by traditional plastic SIM cards.

The move forms part of MTN Ghana’s broader sustainability agenda, which includes reducing electronic waste, cutting carbon footprint, and setting new industry benchmarks for green innovation. By shifting to biodegradable SIMs, the company aims to influence wider adoption of sustainable practices across Ghana’s telecommunications sector.
