Mali uses AI to teach school children in Bambara

Mali has introduced artificial intelligence tools to support education in local languages, marking a significant step in using technology to promote literacy and cultural preservation. The initiative, led by AI company RobotsMali, involves producing educational content in Bambara, one of the country’s most widely spoken languages, to enhance learning among school children.

According to the company, over 100 stories have been generated in Bambara and other local languages. These texts are now integrated into the curriculum of participating schools, providing students with access to culturally relevant reading materials. The initiative aims to improve comprehension and engagement by teaching children in a language they understand, while also preserving linguistic heritage.

Education experts in Mali have welcomed the project, highlighting its potential to bridge gaps in literacy and educational resources. Traditionally, most educational materials in Mali are produced in French, the country’s official language, which can be a barrier for children in rural and remote communities. By offering AI-generated content in Bambara, educators hope to increase school attendance, comprehension, and reading proficiency.

The Ministry of Education has expressed support for the program, noting that it aligns with broader national goals to integrate digital technology into classrooms and expand access to education in rural areas. Officials are considering extending the AI program to other local languages, such as Fulfulde and Songhai, to reach a wider student population.

Global education observers view Mali’s approach as a pioneering effort in leveraging AI for mother-tongue instruction in Africa. Studies have shown that children learn faster and retain knowledge better when taught in their first language.
