Kenya Power announces new national electricity peak demand of 2,439 MW

Kenya has hit a new national electricity peak demand of 2,439.06 megawatts, marking another milestone in the country’s accelerating energy consumption. Kenya Power confirmed the record, reached on December 4, 2025, barely weeks after the previous peak of 2,418.77 MW was set on November 18.

The jump highlights rising uptake among both commercial and household users, driven by expanding industrial activity, urban growth and broader access to the grid. It also signals stronger economic momentum, with energy demand often tracking business productivity and domestic consumption trends.

Kenya Power noted that the sustained increase in peak load reflects ongoing investments in transmission infrastructure, improved reliability of supply and rapid customer connections across counties. The utility is under continuous pressure to match this upward trajectory with generation capacity that can respond to peak-hour strain.

The latest numbers position Kenya as one of the fastest-growing electricity markets in East Africa, underscoring the need for further expansion of generation sources, particularly geothermal, hydro, wind and solar, to maintain grid stability as demand keeps climbing.
