ACTOM Pretoria power transformers reopens facility as local manufacturing gets a major boost

ACTOM has reopened its Pretoria Power Transformer manufacturing facility, marking a major step forward for South Africa’s industrial and energy-manufacturing capacity. The relaunch follows the strategic acquisition of SGB SMIT Power Matla, completed through an asset transaction that included the transfer of staff to safeguard jobs and technical expertise.

The reopening ceremony drew key stakeholders from across the energy and manufacturing sectors, signalling renewed confidence in South Africa’s ability to produce large-scale, high-voltage transformers locally rather than relying on imports.

Industry analysts say the move strengthens South Africa’s localisation agenda at a time when the region is pushing to stabilise power systems and expand grid infrastructure. The Pretoria plant is expected to support national build programmes, accelerate turnaround times for utility projects, and reduce costs associated with foreign procurement and logistics.

ACTOM’s investment also preserves critical engineering skills, ensuring local technicians and artisans continue to play central roles in transformer design, assembly and maintenance, a capability deemed essential for long-term energy security.

With the factory now operational, ACTOM positions itself as one of the leading transformer manufacturers on the continent, supporting both domestic demand and regional export opportunities.
