Tanzania renews call for investment in high-quality tree seeds to secure future forests

Tanzania is urging stronger investment in high-quality tree seeds as the country pushes to protect its forests and build long-term climate resilience. Officials say Africa holds a unique opportunity to lead global forest regeneration, but only if research, innovation, and improved seed technologies are prioritised.

The renewed call comes as forest degradation, land-use pressure and climate change continue to threaten Tanzania’s natural ecosystems. Experts argue that the quality of seeds used in reforestation directly determines the strength, survival and productivity of future forests. Without upgraded seed systems, large-scale tree-planting programmes risk weak yields, low adaptability, and long-term ecological losses.

Government institutions and conservation partners are emphasising the need for investment in seed research centres, genetic improvement, and region-specific varieties capable of withstanding changing environmental conditions. Strengthening seed supply chains is also seen as critical to supporting community forestry, commercial plantations, and national climate-action goals.

The push aligns with wider continental ambitions, including the African Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative (AFR100), which aims to restore 100 million hectares of land by 2030. Tanzania’s forestry experts say that without high-quality seeds, these restoration targets cannot be sustainably achieved.
