Zoom brings its AI assistant to the web with access for free users

Zoom has expanded the reach of its AI assistant by launching AI Companion 3.0 on the web, giving free users limited access as the company pushes deeper into the competitive enterprise and productivity AI space.

The move allows users without paid subscriptions to try Zoom’s AI Companion through a browser, where it can assist with tasks such as meeting summaries, drafting messages, generating notes, and answering contextual questions based on conversations. Previously, most advanced AI features were reserved for paid enterprise and business customers.

Zoom says the web rollout is part of a broader strategy to make AI a core layer across its platform rather than a premium add-on. By exposing free users to AI Companion, the company is betting that familiarity and everyday utility will drive upgrades to paid plans over time.

AI Companion 3.0 builds on Zoom’s existing meeting-focused intelligence by extending support beyond calls. Users can interact with the assistant before and after meetings, ask follow-up questions, and automate routine collaboration tasks, reducing time spent on manual documentation and communication.

The expansion also positions Zoom more directly against rivals such as Microsoft, Google, and Slack, which have been aggressively embedding AI assistants into their productivity ecosystems. While competitors often gate advanced AI tools behind higher-priced subscriptions, Zoom’s limited free access could help it retain users and stay relevant as AI becomes a baseline expectation rather than a differentiator.

Zoom has emphasized that AI Companion is powered by a mix of its own models and select third-party technologies, with user data not used to train models by default. As AI adoption accelerates across workplaces, the company appears focused on balancing accessibility, trust, and monetization.
