Spain’s imports of fruits and vegetables from Morocco surged to record levels in 2025, reinforcing the North African kingdom’s position as Spain’s largest agricultural supplier, official data showed.

Imports reached 416,559 tonnes in the first eight months of the year, up 34 percent from the same period in 2024, according to figures from Spain’s customs authority compiled by the Spanish Federation of Producers and Exporters.

In value terms, Spanish purchases of Moroccan produce climbed to €952.6 million by the end of August, placing Morocco at the top of Spain’s global supplier rankings.

The data point to a longer-term structural shift. While import volumes rose by just 8 percent between 2021 and 2025, the total value of Moroccan produce imported by Spain jumped by 58 percent, from €602 million to nearly €1 billion, suggesting a move toward higher value-added and premium products.

Morocco now accounts for around 26 percent of Spain’s total fruit and vegetable imports by value and 38 percent of imports from non-European Union suppliers.

Overall, Spain imported €2.548 billion worth of fruit and vegetables from non-EU countries during the period, with Morocco alone capturing almost €1 billion of that total.

Analysts attribute Morocco’s growing dominance to sustained investment in agricultural modernisation, improved logistics and transport links, and its geographic proximity to Europe. Strong integration into Euro-Mediterranean supply chains, underpinned by trade agreements between Morocco and the European Union, has also played a key role.

The surge has fuelled debate among Spanish farmers over competition from non-EU producers, but FEPEX said the figures primarily reflect Morocco’s reliability as a supplier and the competitiveness of its agricultural sector.

Morocco is increasingly seen as a strategic partner in regional food security and a cornerstone of Euro-Mediterranean agricultural trade, the federation added.
