Amazon has introduced a major upgrade to its smart home ecosystem with the launch of Alexa+, a new feature that brings conversational artificial intelligence to Ring doorbells, deepening the integration between its voice assistant and home security products.
According to Amazon, Alexa+ uses advanced AI models to interpret video descriptions generated by Ring doorbells, allowing the system to better understand who is at the door and what they are doing. Rather than relying solely on motion alerts, the feature analyses visual cues such as uniforms, actions, and objects a person may be carrying to provide more meaningful, context-aware responses.
For users, this means Alexa can answer more natural questions like who is at the door or what the person appears to be doing, instead of delivering generic notifications. For example, the system could distinguish between a delivery worker holding a package, a maintenance worker in uniform, or an unfamiliar individual lingering near the entrance.

TechCrunch reports that the feature is part of Amazon’s broader push to make Alexa more conversational and useful, especially as competition intensifies in the AI assistant market from rivals such as Google, Apple, and OpenAI-powered platforms. Amazon has been under pressure to modernise Alexa after years of criticism that the assistant lagged behind newer generative AI tools.
The Alexa+ upgrade builds on Amazon’s recent investments in large language models and multimodal AI, which combine text, voice, and visual understanding. By applying these capabilities to Ring devices, Amazon is positioning its smart home products as not just reactive security tools, but proactive assistants that can interpret situations in real time.
Privacy remains a key concern, and Amazon said the feature operates within existing Ring privacy controls, with users able to manage data access, video storage, and AI-driven insights through their account settings.

The rollout of Alexa+ signals Amazon’s intention to turn everyday devices like doorbells into intelligent interfaces, as conversational AI becomes a core feature of consumer technology rather than a standalone product.
