Egypt, Tanzania discuss joint transport and industrial projects

Egypt and Tanzania have held high-level talks on launching joint strategic projects in transport and industry, signalling a deepening of bilateral economic cooperation between the two African partners.

Egypt’s Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, Kamel Al-Wazir, met Tanzanian Foreign Minister Mahmoud Thabit Kombo and Minister of Information, Culture and Sports Yalamma Gamba John Kabudi, according to a joint statement from Egypt’s ministries of industry and transport.

The meeting was held within the framework of longstanding ties between Egypt and Tanzania, and in line with directives from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi to strengthen cooperation with African nations.

Al-Wazir said Egypt was keen to expand collaboration with Tanzania across multiple sectors, particularly transport and industry, stressing that proposed projects would be based on integration rather than competition. He pointed to the close political relationship between Al-Sisi and Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan as a foundation for deeper economic ties.

Among the initiatives discussed was the possible establishment of a cargo terminal at Dar es Salaam Port, to be developed by Egyptian companies and linked to global shipping lines in order to boost trade flows between the two countries.

The talks also covered plans for an integrated livestock breeding complex, a modern slaughterhouse and a leather tanning factory, alongside specialized facilities aimed at improving production management and marketing efficiency.

According to the statement, the projects would support greater movement of Egyptian raw materials and manufactured goods to Tanzania, while easing the import of Tanzanian products into Egypt through major ports, including Sokhna, Safaga and Dar es Salaam.

Both sides further explored the reciprocal establishment of logistics zones—one for Egypt in Tanzania and another for Tanzania in Egypt—modelled on Egypt’s previous experience with Rwanda. The initiative is expected to promote joint investment, deepen industrial cooperation, enhance economic integration and create employment opportunities, particularly for young people.

Al-Wazir highlighted Egypt’s track record in infrastructure development, noting that Egyptian firms have delivered large-scale projects at home and abroad, including roads, bridges, airports and tunnels. He said these companies were ready to implement projects in Tanzania to high standards, within short timeframes and at competitive costs.

For his part, Kombo praised Egypt’s expertise in infrastructure, transport, industry and agriculture, saying the discussions had laid the groundwork for moving ahead with implementation. He added that Tanzania would take steps to finalise project frameworks and extended an official invitation to Al-Wazir to visit Tanzania for follow-up meetings with ministers responsible for agriculture, transport, industry and investment.

Kabudi welcomed the outcomes of the talks, reaffirming Tanzania’s readiness to proceed with the joint initiatives and signalling intensified coordination in the coming period.
