Sweden has publicly expressed support for Somalia’s federal government following Israel’s decision to recognise Somaliland as an independent state, a move that has triggered diplomatic backlash across Africa and the Middle East.
In a statement issued days after Israel’s announcement, Swedish authorities reaffirmed their support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, aligning with Mogadishu’s position that Somaliland remains an integral part of the Somali Republic. Sweden’s stance places it alongside the African Union, the Arab League and several regional and international actors who have criticised Israel’s move.
Israel became the first country to formally recognise Somaliland on Friday, drawing sharp condemnation from Somalia, which described the decision as a violation of its sovereignty and a threat to regional stability. Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 following the collapse of the central government and has since operated as a self-governing entity with its own institutions, currency and security forces, but without broad international recognition.

Sweden’s intervention adds to mounting diplomatic pressure against Israel’s recognition, with the Arab League issuing a separate statement condemning the move and reiterating its support for Somalia’s territorial integrity. Several African and Middle Eastern countries have also warned that the decision could destabilise the Horn of Africa, a region already facing security, humanitarian and political challenges.
Mogadishu has called for international solidarity and is pushing the issue onto multilateral platforms, including the United Nations, arguing that unilateral recognition of Somaliland undermines established international norms and could encourage separatist movements elsewhere on the continent.
While Israel has defended its decision as a sovereign diplomatic choice, most of the international community continues to recognise Somalia within its internationally accepted borders, including Somaliland. Sweden’s position reinforces that consensus and signals continued European support for Somalia amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Horn of Africa.
