Somalia strengthens economic cooperation with World Bank to advance development reforms

Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has held high-level talks with a World Bank delegation as the country moves to deepen cooperation on its economic development agenda and consolidate recent reform gains.

The discussions focused on strengthening macroeconomic stability and accelerating priority investments in infrastructure, energy, and regional integration under the Horn of Africa Initiative. Officials highlighted the need to translate policy reforms into tangible growth outcomes, particularly through projects that improve connectivity, expand access to electricity, and unlock private sector activity.

The engagement builds on Somalia’s ongoing economic reform programme, which has centred on fiscal discipline, public financial management reforms, and debt relief milestones achieved in recent years. The World Bank has been a key partner in supporting these efforts, providing budget support, technical assistance, and financing for infrastructure and social development projects.

Both sides emphasised the importance of regional integration in driving long-term growth, noting that improved transport links, cross-border trade, and energy cooperation within the Horn of Africa could significantly enhance Somalia’s economic resilience. Investments aligned with the initiative are expected to strengthen regional supply chains and position Somalia more competitively within East Africa.

President Mohamud reaffirmed his government’s commitment to working closely with international partners to sustain reforms, attract investment, and deliver inclusive growth. He stressed that economic stability and development remain central to improving livelihoods, creating jobs, and supporting peacebuilding efforts across the country.

The talks reflect Somalia’s push to stabilise its economy and move from reform commitments to real investment on the ground. With support from partners like the World Bank, the government is prioritising infrastructure, energy, and regional links as it works to rebuild confidence and improve living conditions across the country.
