Chinese President Xi Jinping has congratulated Laura Fernandez on her election as president of Costa Rica, reaffirming Beijing’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries.
In a message sent on Thursday, Xi noted that since the establishment of diplomatic relations 18 years ago, China and Costa Rica have recorded rapid progress in their relationship, achieving tangible results through cooperation and exchanges across multiple sectors. He said these developments have delivered concrete benefits to the peoples of both nations.
Xi stated that the evolution of China–Costa Rica relations has demonstrated that closer ties serve the fundamental interests of both countries and reflect broader global trends as well as shared aspirations.

He stressed that China places high importance on its relationship with Costa Rica and expressed readiness to work closely with President-elect Fernandez to enhance strategic communication, deepen political mutual trust, and expand cooperation in various fields.
The Chinese leader added that bilateral relations would continue to advance steadily on the basis of the one-China principle, with the aim of generating greater benefits for both peoples.
The message was issued as Costa Rica prepares for a new administration following Fernandez’s electoral victory.
