Facebook adds new AI features, animated profile photos, and backgrounds for text posts

Facebook is rolling out a fresh set of AI-powered features aimed at making profiles and posts more expressive, as Meta steps up efforts to keep the platform culturally relevant and visually engaging.

According to reports, the new updates allow users to animate their profile pictures, restyle Stories and Memories using AI, and add dynamic backgrounds to text-only posts. The features are designed to lower the barrier to creative content creation while leaning into generative AI as a core part of the Facebook experience.

One of the most visible changes is animated profile photos. Users can now apply subtle motion effects to their profile pictures, creating short looping animations rather than static images. Meta says the feature is meant to make profiles feel more “alive” without requiring users to upload full videos.

Facebook is also expanding AI-powered creative tools for Stories and Memories. Users can restyle old photos and videos with different visual themes, moods, and effects generated by AI, giving older content a refreshed look that fits current trends. This move aligns with Meta’s broader push to re-surface Memories as shareable, engaging content rather than static throwbacks.

Text posts, long seen as one of Facebook’s more dated formats, are also getting an upgrade. Users can now add AI-generated backgrounds to text posts, transforming simple status updates into visually enhanced cards. Meta hopes this will encourage more posting from users who may not want to share photos or videos but still want their posts to stand out in crowded feeds.

The rollout reflects Meta’s wider strategy of embedding AI across its apps, including Instagram and WhatsApp, as competition for user attention intensifies across social platforms. By focusing on lightweight, consumer-friendly AI tools, Meta appears to be targeting everyday users rather than creators alone.

The features are expected to roll out gradually, with availability varying by region and device. Meta has not disclosed whether any of the tools will eventually be gated behind paid tiers.

As Facebook continues to evolve beyond its original social networking roots, these updates signal a clear message: AI is no longer an add-on, but a central part of how Meta wants people to create, share, and express themselves on the platform.
