Airtel hits 650 million subscribers to become world’s second largest telecom operator

Bharti Airtel has crossed a major global milestone, reaching over 650 million subscribers, a feat that now positions it as the second largest telecom operator in the world by customer base.

The milestone, confirmed using data from GSMA Intelligence, reflects Airtel’s rapid expansion across both India and Africa, where it has built one of the most extensive telecommunications networks globally.

A significant portion of this growth comes from its dual market strategy. In India, Airtel serves more than 360 million mobile users, while its African operations, under Airtel Africa, account for over 170 million subscribers across 14 countries.  This strong footprint across emerging markets has been central to its rise in global rankings.

Beyond traditional mobile services, Airtel has evolved into a broader digital ecosystem. The company now offers services spanning mobile data, broadband internet, digital television, enterprise solutions, and mobile financial services through platforms like Airtel Money, which has attracted tens of millions of users.

Industry analysts note that Airtel’s growth reflects a wider shift in the telecom sector, where operators are no longer just connectivity providers but full scale digital service platforms. Increased smartphone penetration, rising data consumption, and demand for digital financial services have all contributed to Airtel’s expanding user base.

The company’s leadership has acknowledged that the milestone comes with increased responsibility. Executives have emphasized the need to continue investing in network quality, innovation, and customer experience to maintain competitiveness in an increasingly saturated global telecom market.

Airtel’s expansion strategy has also included investments in next generation technologies such as 5G networks and satellite broadband partnerships aimed at improving connectivity in underserved and remote regions. These efforts are expected to further strengthen its market position, particularly in regions like Africa where digital infrastructure gaps still exist.

The rise to second place globally highlights the growing importance of emerging markets in shaping the future of telecommunications.
