Inwi, China Mobile partner on Morocco’s first private industrial 5G network

Moroccan telecoms operator Inwi and China Mobile International have signed an agreement to deploy Morocco’s first private industrial 5G network, in a move aimed at accelerating digital transformation in the country’s manufacturing and logistics sectors.

The partnership, announced on the sidelines of GITEX Africa Morocco in Marrakech, will see the rollout of a dedicated high-speed network for industrial use at a 52-hectare site in Nador, in the country’s northeastern Oriental region. The project is being positioned as a flagship step in Morocco’s efforts to embed advanced connectivity into industrial infrastructure and support the development of Industry 4.0 capabilities.

Under the agreement, Inwi will be responsible for the design, deployment, commissioning and operation of the private 5G infrastructure, which will serve one of China Mobile International’s major industrial clients operating in the region. The site is located near the Nador port complex, an area increasingly viewed as strategically important for industrial logistics, trade and export-oriented production.

Private 5G networks differ from public mobile networks in that they are dedicated to a specific enterprise or site, offering enhanced control, stronger security, lower latency and more predictable performance. These features make them particularly attractive for industrial operations that depend on real-time connectivity, automation and uninterrupted data flows.

According to Inwi, the Nador deployment is intended to support advanced industrial applications including automation, remote monitoring, connected sensors, and large-scale Internet of Things (IoT) systems. Such infrastructure can be used to manage intelligent production systems, track operational indicators in real time and optimise workflows in complex industrial environments.

“This project paves the way for a new generation of Industry 4.0 in Morocco,” Inwi said in a statement, describing the initiative as part of its broader ambition to provide Moroccan industrial firms with secure, high-performance and sovereign digital infrastructure tailored to critical use cases.

The operator said the deployment would offer ultra-reliable and ultra-low-latency connectivity, capabilities seen as essential for the operation of intelligent machinery, predictive maintenance systems and data-intensive industrial applications. Industry specialists say private 5G is increasingly being adopted by manufacturers and logistics operators worldwide as they seek to improve efficiency, reduce downtime and integrate artificial intelligence and analytics into daily operations.

The project also highlights Morocco’s growing interest in using digital infrastructure as a tool for industrial competitiveness. The government has in recent years sought to position the country as a regional manufacturing and logistics hub, supported by investments in ports, industrial zones, renewable energy and digital transformation. The introduction of a private industrial 5G network fits within that broader strategy of modernising production and aligning local facilities with global smart factory standards.

Inwi said it was also drawing on technological expertise developed through previous work with Huawei, particularly in areas such as mining, energy, agriculture and logistics, sectors where secure, site-specific digital infrastructure is increasingly in demand. The operator suggested the Nador rollout could serve as a model for similar deployments in other industrial zones across the country.

For China Mobile International, the agreement marks a strategic expansion of its role in supporting industrial connectivity projects beyond Asia, while reinforcing ties with North African markets undergoing rapid digitalisation. The company said the partnership would help build high-speed infrastructure capable of supporting long-term industrial transformation and regional economic development.

While still at an early stage, the deployment is symbolically significant for Morocco, where 5G has so far been more widely discussed in consumer and national infrastructure terms than in dedicated industrial applications. By launching the country’s first private industrial 5G network, Inwi and China Mobile are betting that next-generation connectivity will become a central pillar of Morocco’s industrial future.
