Tanzania to host 74th Miss World pageant in 2027

Tanzania will host the 74th edition of the Miss World pageant in May 2027, in a move officials say will boost tourism, investment promotion and the country’s global visibility.

The agreement was announced on Monday in Dar es Salaam in the presence of Minister of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports Paul Makonda, who described the development as a major milestone for the East African nation.

Makonda said Tanzania will become only the second African country after South Africa to host the global event, and the first in East and Central Africa to do so.

He said more than 130 countries are expected to take part in the competition, with projections of over 20,000 international visitors attending related events over the course of the month-long programme. Organisers also estimate a global television audience exceeding two billion viewers.

“This is more than a beauty contest. It is a strategic platform to showcase Tanzania’s tourism, culture, investment opportunities and creative industries to the world,” Makonda said.

The Miss World pageant, founded in 1951, is one of the longest-running international competitions of its kind. It brings together contestants from across the globe, judged not only on appearance but also on talent, charity work and social impact initiatives under its “Beauty with a Purpose” programme.

Officials said the 2027 edition will feature a series of events including cultural showcases, talent competitions, charity activities and a grand finale expected to attract global media attention.

Tanzania has in recent years intensified efforts to position itself as a leading tourism and events destination in Africa, leveraging its national parks, coastal attractions and cultural heritage to attract international visitors and investment.

The government says hosting large-scale global events forms part of a broader strategy to expand the country’s creative economy and strengthen its international branding.

Industry observers note that such events can generate significant short-term tourism revenue while also providing longer-term benefits through increased visibility and foreign engagement.

Preparations for the pageant are expected to involve both public and private sector coordination, with emphasis on infrastructure, hospitality services and cultural programming ahead of the 2027 event.
