Egypt, Sweden step up pharmaceutical cooperation in push for strategic partnership

Egypt and Sweden are seeking to deepen cooperation in the pharmaceutical sector, officials said, as both countries explore ways to expand investment, regulatory alignment and technology transfer.

The head of the Egyptian Drug Authority, Ali El Ghamrawy, held talks with Sweden’s ambassador to Cairo, Dag Juhlin-Dannfelt, to discuss strengthening bilateral ties and advancing a more integrated partnership.

The meeting followed a recent visit by Sweden’s health minister to Egypt, underlining a shared commitment to broadening collaboration in the pharmaceutical field.

El Ghamrawy highlighted the importance of international partnerships in supporting Egypt’s efforts to enhance its regulatory framework and align with global standards.

He pointed in particular to ongoing technical cooperation with the Swedish Medical Products Agency, which he said would help Egypt progress toward achieving Maturity Level 4 under the World Health Organization benchmarking system — a key indicator of advanced regulatory performance.

Such a step would strengthen Egypt’s capacity to oversee drug safety, quality and efficacy, while boosting confidence among international investors and manufacturers.

For his part, Juhlin-Dannfelt reaffirmed Sweden’s support for Egypt’s ambition to become a regional hub for pharmaceutical production, citing the country’s strategic location linking African, Middle Eastern and European markets.

Discussions also focused on facilitating the operations of Swedish companies in Egypt, including streamlining procedures for the supply of technical components used in medical products.

Both sides emphasised the importance of promoting investment in advanced pharmaceutical industries and encouraging the transfer of technology and expertise.

Egypt

Egypt has increasingly positioned itself as a key player in regional drug manufacturing, seeking to localise production and reduce dependence on imports while strengthening supply chains.

Officials said the latest talks reflect growing international confidence in Egypt’s regulatory system and its potential to attract high-quality investment in the healthcare sector.

They added that closer cooperation with partners such as Sweden could support innovation and improve access to medicines, while reinforcing Egypt’s role as a reliable hub for pharmaceutical production and regulation in the region.

The meeting forms part of broader efforts by Cairo to expand economic partnerships and leverage its geographic and industrial advantages to drive growth in strategic sectors.
