The United States military has carried out new strikes in southern Iran, targeting missile launch sites and boats allegedly attempting to lay mines, in what officials described as defensive actions to protect American forces in the region.
According to the US Central Command, the operations were conducted on Monday, May 25, 2026, and focused on threats posed by Iranian forces operating near strategic maritime routes, including areas close to the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil shipping corridors.
Military officials said the strikes were aimed at neutralising assets that posed an immediate risk to US personnel, including vessels suspected of preparing naval mines and infrastructure linked to missile launches. The operation also targeted what the US described as coordinated Iranian military activity in southern coastal zones.
Navy Captain Tim Hawkins, a spokesperson for US Central Command, said the action was taken under a defensive mandate. “The strikes were designed to protect our troops from threats posed by Iranian forces,” he said, adding that US forces continue to operate with restraint amid ongoing ceasefire conditions.

The latest strikes come at a sensitive moment in wider US Iran relations, where diplomatic efforts to maintain a fragile ceasefire remain ongoing. Despite tensions, US officials insist that military operations are being limited to targeted defensive responses rather than full scale escalation.
Reports indicate that Iranian naval activity, including suspected mine laying operations, has been a growing concern for international shipping in the Gulf region. The Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of global oil supplies pass, has remained a focal point of security concerns amid periodic military confrontations.
The US has previously conducted similar strikes in response to what it describes as Iranian threats to maritime security and American forces operating in the region. These include operations against naval vessels and missile related infrastructure linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
While Washington maintains that its actions are defensive, the situation continues to fuel broader geopolitical tension in the Middle East, particularly as diplomatic negotiations attempt to prevent further escalation between the two sides.

Iran has not yet issued an official response to the latest strikes, though state affiliated media have in previous incidents condemned US military actions as violations of sovereignty.
The developments underline the continuing volatility in the region, where military activity and diplomatic negotiations are unfolding simultaneously, with both sides maintaining pressure while still leaving room for potential talks aimed at stabilising the situation.
