South Africa’s CemAir signs interline agreement with Air Europa to expand global connectivity

South African regional airline CemAir has signed an interline agreement with Spanish carrier Air Europa, creating new travel connections between Southern Africa, Europe and the Americas.

The partnership will allow passengers travelling with Air Europa to connect onto CemAir’s domestic and regional routes in Southern Africa through a single itinerary, with streamlined baggage handling and improved travel convenience.

CemAir said the agreement strengthens its role as a regional aviation partner for international airlines seeking access beyond South Africa’s major metropolitan centres.

Through Air Europa’s global network, passengers will gain easier access to destinations in Europe and the Americas via the Spanish airline’s Madrid hub.

The deal forms part of CemAir’s broader strategy to expand partnerships with international carriers and improve connectivity for travellers moving between Southern Africa and global markets.

CemAir Chief Commercial Officer Shaniel Singh welcomed the agreement, saying the partnership would create additional travel opportunities while supporting tourism and business travel across the region.

“We are delighted to welcome Air Europa as our newest interline partner,” Singh said.

He added that combining Air Europa’s international reach with CemAir’s extensive Southern African network would provide travellers with smoother and more convenient journeys.

The agreement also allows Air Europa passengers to travel beyond Johannesburg and access additional destinations across Southern Africa.

Air Europa’s Alliances and Customer Experience Director Estelle Leray said the partnership would improve connectivity for passengers and strengthen the airline’s presence in Johannesburg through cooperation with an established regional operator.

“We are very pleased to move forward with this agreement with CemAir, which will allow our passengers to travel beyond Johannesburg and access new destinations across Southern Africa in a seamless and efficient way,” Leray said.

The aviation partnership comes as airlines continue seeking new ways to expand route networks through cooperation agreements rather than launching every route independently.

Interline agreements allow airlines to combine networks, enabling passengers to book connecting journeys more easily while benefiting from coordinated baggage transfers and ticketing arrangements.

For Southern Africa’s travel industry, improved international connectivity is seen as important for supporting tourism growth, trade and business movement.

CemAir operates domestic and regional services across Southern Africa, connecting major cities and smaller destinations that are not always served by larger international carriers.

The airline has increasingly focused on partnerships with global operators to broaden travel options for passengers and strengthen its position in the regional aviation market.

Air Europa, part of the Spanish tourism and aviation group Globalia, operates flights connecting Europe with destinations in the Americas and other international markets.

The new agreement is expected to provide more travel options for passengers between Southern Africa and international destinations while supporting stronger links between the region and global markets.
