Senegal and Mali have secured their places in the quarter-finals of the TotalEnergies AFCON 2025, setting up an all–West African clash after overcoming Sudan and Tunisia respectively in Saturday’s Round of 16 fixtures.

In Tangier, Senegal came from behind to defeat Sudan 3–1, underlining their tournament credentials despite an early scare. Sudan stunned the reigning champions just six minutes in when Aamir Abdalla struck from range, but Senegal responded with authority. Midfielder Pape Gueye scored twice before half-time, first finishing off a move created by Sadio Mané before adding a second deep into stoppage time to turn the match around. Senegal maintained control after the break, and 17-year-old Ibrahim Mbaye, introduced as a substitute, sealed the win with a composed finish in the 77th minute, confirming Senegal’s passage to the last eight.
Earlier in Rabat, Mali edged Tunisia 3–2 on penalties after a dramatic 1–1 draw, in a match defined by late goals and shifting momentum. Tunisia looked set for victory when Firas Chaouat scored in the 88th minute, capitalising on sustained pressure. However, Mali showed resilience, equalising in stoppage time through Lassine Sinayoko to force extra time. The contest remained level after 120 minutes, sending the tie to penalties, where Mali held their nerve to advance.

The Mali–Tunisia encounter was not without controversy or tension. Mali were forced to navigate long spells under pressure, including playing with reduced numbers after a second-half red card, yet managed to stay compact and disciplined. Goalkeeper heroics and missed penalties from Tunisia ultimately proved decisive as Mali converted three of their spot-kicks to book their place in the quarter-finals.
With both teams progressing, Senegal and Mali will now face each other on Friday in Tangier, in what promises to be one of the standout quarter-final ties of AFCON 2025. Senegal arrive with attacking momentum and depth, while Mali’s gritty comeback and penalty shootout win underline their resilience under pressure.
