Africa Prosperity Dialogue 2026 opens in Accra, spotlight on SMEs, women and youth

Africa’s business and political leaders gathered on Wednesday at the International Conference Centre in Accra for the opening of the 2026 Africa Prosperity Dialogue (APD), the premier forum aimed at translating the promise of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) into tangible economic outcomes.

Hosted under the patronage of Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, the fourth edition of APD has evolved from a dialogue platform into what organisers call a “Boardroom of Africa,” designed to broker deals, shape policy, and accelerate the delivery of a single, borderless market for the continent’s 1.5 billion citizens.

Themed “Empowering SMEs, Women and Youth in Africa’s Single Market: Innovate. Collaborate. Trade,” APD 2026 is focusing on Africa’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which account for more than 80 percent of employment across the continent. The forum aims to move beyond rhetoric and deliver actionable strategies to enhance intra-African trade, drive youth employment, and promote inclusive economic growth.

“The APD is no longer just a meeting of minds. It is a platform for tangible outcomes where business and government converge to create an enabling environment for trade and investment,” said an official from the APD secretariat. “Our focus this year is clear: SMEs, women, and youth are the engines of Africa’s economic future, and we are prioritising initiatives that remove barriers and unlock their potential.”

The forum, organised in collaboration with the AfCFTA Secretariat and a range of strategic partners, will feature a combination of panel discussions, roundtables, and deal-making sessions. Key topics include facilitating cross-border trade for SMEs, expanding digital and financial inclusion, and leveraging innovation to enhance competitiveness.

Officials and business leaders attending the opening emphasised the role of women and young entrepreneurs in driving economic growth. According to APD organisers, women-led enterprises constitute nearly 40 percent of Africa’s SMEs, yet they continue to face systemic barriers in accessing finance, markets, and technology. The dialogue seeks to address these challenges, with initiatives designed to connect entrepreneurs with investors, mentors, and regional trade opportunities.

Youth unemployment remains a pressing concern across Africa, with estimates suggesting that more than 60 million young people are out of work. APD 2026 organisers said that the forum would spotlight innovative models for skills development, entrepreneurship, and intra-African trade as key pathways to creating sustainable jobs for the continent’s growing population.

Participants are expected to explore a range of financing mechanisms, including venture capital, development finance, and blended funding models, aimed at strengthening SMEs’ capacity to scale across borders. Technology-driven solutions, particularly in e-commerce, fintech, and agritech, will also feature prominently in discussions.

Ghana, as the host nation, is using APD 2026 to reinforce its position as a regional hub for trade and investment under AfCFTA. Officials noted that the country has implemented reforms to facilitate business registration, improve logistics, and expand digital infrastructure, creating a favorable environment for SMEs and cross-border commerce.

The dialogue is being closely watched by regional and international stakeholders as a barometer of Africa’s progress toward realising the economic integration promised by AfCFTA. Analysts said APD’s emphasis on practical outcomes, including financing, capacity-building, and market access for SMEs, women, and youth, represents a shift from policy discussion toward measurable economic impact.

As APD 2026 unfolds over the next two days, organisers aim to generate actionable commitments that can translate into tangible improvements for Africa’s small businesses and entrepreneurs. By fostering collaboration between governments, private sector actors, and development partners, the forum seeks to accelerate the continent’s journey toward a unified, competitive, and inclusive single market.
