African startups called to compete for US$1m global water innovation prize

Africa

African startups have been invited to apply for the fifth edition of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Water Award, a US$1 million competition aimed at promoting innovative, clean-energy solutions to global water challenges.

The award, launched by the United Arab Emirates, recognises projects that use renewable energy to improve water production, distribution, storage, desalination and purification, organisers said.

Open to innovators from Africa and beyond, the competition features multiple categories covering small and large-scale projects, scientific research, individual innovation, and solutions designed for humanitarian crises and emergency settings.

Organisers said the initiative seeks to encourage practical technologies that can address water scarcity, particularly in regions facing climate stress, rapid population growth and limited infrastructure. Africa remains one of the continents most affected by water insecurity, with millions lacking reliable access to safe drinking water.

Applications for the 2026 edition are open until April 30, 2026, with winners to be selected based on innovation, sustainability, scalability and social impact.

The Global Water Award is part of broader international efforts to accelerate clean-energy-driven water solutions and support entrepreneurs developing technologies capable of improving water access and resilience in vulnerable communities.
