African Union expresses solidarity with Niger, condemns terrorist attacks

The President of the African Union Commission, His Excellency Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has strongly condemned recent terrorist attacks in the Republic of Niger and reaffirmed the African Union’s solidarity with the Nigerien people and government.

According to an official statement, President Youssouf expressed deep concern over the armed attack on Hamani Diori International Airport in Niamey during the night of 28–29 January 2026, carried out by armed assailants. He also conveyed profound sadness over a deadly attack in the village of Bosiye in western Niger on 18 January 2026, which claimed the lives of approximately 30 innocent civilians.

In his statement, the AU Commission President denounced these acts as “odious” and part of a broader campaign of terror by violent extremist groups deliberately targeting civilian populations and public infrastructure. He praised the swift and professional response of Nigerien security forces, which helped to repel the airport assault and protect lives.

President Youssouf expressed the African Union’s compassion and full support for the people of Niger, extending sincere condolences to the families of the victims and to the Government of the Republic of Niger.

He also acknowledged the ongoing efforts of Nigerien authorities in combating violent extremism and terrorism, notably citing recent operations by the Nigerien Armed Forces. The statement highlighted a large-scale operation in the Tillabéri region, which reportedly neutralised several armed elements, disrupted terrorist groups, and recovered property previously looted from local communities.

The African Union reiterated that terrorism and violent extremism remain grave threats to peace, stability, and the territorial integrity of affected states. President Youssouf stressed the importance of collective action and reaffirmed the AU Commission’s readiness to support Niger’s efforts in close coordination with neighbouring countries and international partners.
