African Union expresses solidarity with the people of Venezuela

The African Union (AU) has expressed solidarity with the people of Venezuela amid escalating political and security tensions following recent developments involving the United States and the Venezuelan government. In a statement issued by the Chairperson of the AU Commission, the continental body reaffirmed its long-standing commitment to the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and non-interference in the internal affairs of member states and partner countries.

The AU underscored the need for restraint by all parties and called for a peaceful, inclusive and Venezuelan-led process to resolve the crisis. It warned that unilateral military actions and external interference risk deepening instability and humanitarian suffering, not only in Venezuela but across the wider Latin American region.

Reiterating Africa’s own historical experience with external interventions, the AU stressed that durable peace can only be achieved through dialogue, respect for international law and multilateral engagement under the framework of the United Nations. The Union encouraged diplomatic efforts aimed at protecting civilians and facilitating a credible political transition based on consensus.

The statement concluded by affirming the AU’s readiness to support international initiatives that promote peace, stability and the welfare of the Venezuelan people, while urging the global community to prioritise diplomacy over force.
