Amazon Web Services (AWS) has introduced a new artificial intelligence platform designed specifically for the health care sector, marking another major step in the growing adoption of AI technologies in medical systems. The platform, called Amazon Connect Health, aims to help hospitals, clinics and medical organisations automate many of the administrative tasks that often slow down patient care and strain health care workers.

The new system is built around “agentic AI,” a concept that allows multiple specialised AI agents to work together across different tasks within the health care workflow. These AI agents are designed to assist with patient verification, appointment scheduling, medical documentation and coding, enabling hospitals to streamline operations and reduce the amount of time clinicians spend on paperwork rather than patient care.

Administrative workloads remain one of the biggest challenges facing health care systems worldwide. Doctors, nurses and administrative staff often spend significant portions of their time handling patient records, scheduling appointments, verifying insurance information and preparing documentation for billing. AWS believes that automating these processes can dramatically improve efficiency while also improving patient experience.

At the core of the platform are five specialised AI agents that operate across the patient care journey. One agent verifies patient identity in real time using electronic health record systems, reducing the time spent confirming patient details during calls or check-ins. Another agent manages appointments through natural language voice interactions, allowing patients to book, reschedule or cancel visits at any time without needing to speak with a staff member.

Additional agents focus on assisting clinicians during and after patient visits. The platform can review patient history and compile insights before appointments, helping doctors quickly understand a patient’s medical background. During consultations, the system can transcribe doctor patient conversations and automatically generate clinical notes for review. After a visit, the AI can create billing codes and patient summaries, speeding up processes that traditionally take hours or days to complete.

AWS says the platform integrates directly with the electronic health record systems that health professionals already use. This allows hospitals to deploy the technology without completely replacing existing infrastructure. The company also emphasised that the system includes safety guardrails, audit trails and compliance mechanisms designed to meet strict health data protection requirements.

One of the early adopters of the technology is UC San Diego Health, which handles millions of patient interactions every year. According to AWS, the health system has already reported measurable improvements after using parts of the platform. Call handling times have been reduced by about one minute per call, freeing up hundreds of hours weekly for staff to focus on direct patient assistance. The system has also helped reduce abandoned patient calls significantly, improving access to care.

The new platform also reflects a broader push by AWS to expand its presence in the health care technology market. Cloud computing has become a crucial backbone for modern medical systems, supporting everything from patient records and telemedicine to data analytics and research. By combining cloud infrastructure with AI powered tools, AWS aims to position itself as a major provider of digital health solutions.
