Workers at AT Ghana, formerly AirtelTigo, are staging a peaceful demonstration across all company offices today to protest a proposed merger with Telecel, citing fears that the deal could lead to widespread job losses.
The merger was first announced earlier this year by Ghana’s Minister of Communications, Sam George. Dressed in black and red, employees warned that more than 10,000 jobs could be at risk, even as investors have shown interest in taking over and revamping the company.
The protest underscores growing concerns over workforce security in Ghana’s telecommunications sector, which has seen increasing consolidation in recent years. Analysts say mergers and acquisitions in the industry are often aimed at improving efficiency and attracting investment, but they can also lead to layoffs and restructuring.

AT Ghana has been in discussions with Telecel as part of a strategy to strengthen its operations, infrastructure, and customer base. The proposed merger would reshape the local telecom landscape, raising questions about employee welfare during the transition.
