AU rejects Somaliland recognition, backs Somalia’s unity

The African Union on Friday rejected any move to recognise Somaliland as an independent state, reaffirming its firm support for the unity and sovereignty of Somalia.

African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said the bloc viewed recent developments related to Somaliland with “deep concern,” stressing that the AU’s position on the matter remains unchanged.

He said the African Union is guided by principles set out in its Constitutive Act, notably respect for borders inherited at independence, a doctrine first affirmed by the Organization of African Unity in 1964.

Youssouf said the AU “firmly rejects” any initiative aimed at recognising Somaliland, underlining that the territory remains an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

Any attempt to undermine Somalia’s unity, sovereignty or territorial integrity would violate core African Union principles and risk setting a dangerous precedent with far-reaching consequences for peace and stability across the continent, he warned.

The commission chairperson reiterated the AU’s “unwavering commitment” to Somalia’s territorial integrity and said the bloc fully supports efforts by Somali authorities to consolidate peace, strengthen state institutions and promote inclusive governance.
