Africa

The West African Development Bank (BOAD) will host the second BOAD Development Days on June 11–12, 2026 in Lomé, Togo, with a focus on sustainable housing across the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) region.

The forum will convene policymakers, investors, and technical partners to discuss financing solutions that respond to rapid urbanization and the ongoing energy transition.

The 2026 edition of the event will be held under the theme “Inclusive Housing and Energy Sovereignty”, emphasizing approaches that integrate social inclusivity, environmental sustainability, and regional development. Key discussions will cover innovative financing mechanisms, green finance instruments, and public-private partnerships, designed to unlock resources for large-scale housing initiatives. Additionally, the forum plans to explore fintech solutions as alternative channels to broaden access to funding for residential development.

Housing is positioned as a cross-cutting priority for WAEMU, linking economic growth, climate resilience, job creation, and regional integration. BOAD aims to mobilize both public and private capital to address the growing demand for affordable and sustainable housing in urban and peri-urban areas. By bringing together diverse stakeholders, the Development Days serve as a platform for knowledge exchange, project incubation, and investment promotion.

The first BOAD Development Days, held in June 2025, focused on energy transition and sustainable agriculture. That event highlighted the investment needs across key sectors and attracted participants from several WAEMU member states. Lessons from the inaugural forum are being applied to the 2026 edition to ensure a targeted approach toward housing finance and infrastructure development.

BOAD, headquartered in Lomé, serves the eight WAEMU member states, financing projects in infrastructure, energy, agriculture, and the private sector. The bank plays a pivotal role in regional development by providing long-term financing and technical support for projects that enhance economic growth and social welfare.

The 2026 Development Days will provide a critical platform to explore sustainable housing strategies, including energy-efficient construction, low-carbon urban planning, and affordable residential solutions. By promoting inclusive financing models, BOAD seeks to ensure that housing development not only meets demand but also contributes to climate adaptation, energy sovereignty, and socio-economic inclusion.

In summary, the second BOAD Development Days in Lomé will spotlight sustainable housing as a central theme for regional development in WAEMU. Through dialogue on green finance, innovative funding channels, and public-private partnerships, the forum aims to mobilize resources, foster investment, and accelerate the delivery of inclusive and resilient housing solutions in West Africa.
