Egypt’s apparel exports surpass US$3bn for first time

Egypt’s ready-made garments sector has achieved a historic milestone, with exports exceeding US$3 billion for the first time, according to the Apparel Export Council of Egypt (AECE).

Between January and November 2025, total garment exports reached US$3.1 billion, marking a 22 percent increase over the US$2.5 billion recorded in 2024. The growth reflects both domestic industry development and capacity expansions by existing factories, which now account for 63 percent of total apparel exports, AECE officials said.

Fadel Marzouk, Chairperson and CEO of the AECE, described the achievement as “particularly significant” because it was realised entirely through the capabilities of existing Egyptian factories, highlighting the efficiency, resilience, and global competitiveness of locally produced apparel.

Marzouk noted that the milestone was reached before the full impact of major new foreign investments, many of which are still in preparation or trial-operation phases. “Export data reflect sustained and progressive improvement in factory performance throughout the year, while the Export Council’s strategy to expand Egypt’s presence in international markets played a pivotal role in driving growth,” he said.

The council emphasised the role of government support, noting concrete measures aimed at promoting exports and enhancing the sector’s international competitiveness. Officials expect that the full impact of incoming investments and increased production capacities will become evident in 2026 and 2027, further boosting Egypt’s position as a regional hub for apparel manufacturing.

Marzouk projected that exports could surpass US$4 billion in the near future, supported by the integration of existing industrial expertise with advanced technologies introduced by incoming foreign investors. This aligns with Egypt’s broader strategy to expand non-oil exports and increase foreign currency inflows.

Monthly Performance

The AECE also reported strong month-on-month performance. In November 2025, garment exports rose 18 percent year-on-year to US$281 million. February saw the highest monthly growth rate at 30 percent, while July recorded the highest export value at US$326 million.

The council credited these gains to enhanced factory productivity, greater adherence to international standards, and strategic market diversification, including growing shipments to Europe, the United States, and emerging markets in Africa and Asia.

Sector Outlook

The Egyptian apparel industry’s record performance underscores its growing role in the national economy, providing employment, foreign exchange, and industrial development. Marzouk stressed that continued coordination with government authorities is essential to address production challenges, maintain an attractive investment climate, and sustain the sector’s historic growth trajectory.

“By leveraging local expertise and attracting new capital, Egypt is positioning itself as a leading regional exporter of garments, capable of competing with traditional global hubs while expanding its market share,” he said.

With the combination of existing factory capacity, government backing, and planned foreign investment, Egypt’s apparel exports are expected to continue their upward trajectory, supporting economic diversification and non-oil revenue growth in the coming years.
