El Salvador has rolled out a nationwide education upgrade by partnering with Elon Musk’s xAI to deploy Grok-powered AI tutoring for more than 1 million students. The government says the system will modernise classrooms, improve digital literacy and help close persistent learning gaps across public schools. Grok, known for high-speed reasoning and adaptive responses, will be integrated into learning platforms used from primary to high school.
Officials say the tool will provide personalised explanations, homework support and real-time academic guidance, especially in maths, reading and language subjects. Teachers will receive training to blend AI-driven assistance into lessons, while monitoring dashboards will track student progress. For xAI, this marks its first national-scale education deployment and a strategic expansion into Latin America. The company has tuned Grok’s model to match El Salvador’s curriculum standards, including Spanish-language optimisation and safety filters for minors.

The move aligns with President Nayib Bukele’s broader plan to position El Salvador as a tech-forward nation, following previous digital reforms. Education advisers say the adoption of AI tutoring could help address regional teacher shortages and raise learning outcomes, with neighbouring countries watching closely as the programme rolls out nationwide.
