Gabon, Huawei sign deal to boost digital transformation

The Gabonese government and Chinese technology group Huawei have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at accelerating the country’s digital transformation and strengthening its national digital ecosystem, officials said.

The agreement was signed on Monday under the authority of Gabon’s Minister of Digital Economy Mark-Alexandre Doumba, in the presence of Huawei’s chief executive for Central Africa, Wang Lei.

The deal follows recent talks between Huawei executives and President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema and reflects the government’s push to make digital development a central pillar of its economic strategy.

Under the memorandum, the two sides will establish a joint project committee to identify and oversee strategic digital initiatives, promote the integration of local start-ups and companies into major technology projects, and expand skills transfer and capacity-building programmes to strengthen Gabon’s digital sovereignty.

The partnership also aims to consolidate existing initiatives, including connected schools programmes, while launching new high-value technology projects from 2026 that are expected to support the growth of Gabonese start-ups.

Officials said the agreement is intended to support the emergence of a modern, innovation-driven digital economy in line with the government’s broader development vision.
