The Gambia’s Farmers’ Union has opened discussions with the Chinese Embassy aimed at deepening cooperation in agriculture and boosting support for local producers.
Union President Badou Bah led a delegation to the embassy in Bijilo, where they met Chinese ambassador Liu Jin and Economic and Commercial Counsellor Tong Zhen. The talks centred on strengthening technical capacity, improving market access and exploring investment opportunities in farming infrastructure.
Ambassador Liu said China and The Gambia shared “long-standing friendship” and similar agricultural challenges, noting that farming remained central to both countries’ development goals.
Bah thanked the embassy for its reception and said Gambian farmers were keen to tap into China’s expertise in modern agriculture.
Chinese officials signalled readiness to work with the union in areas including mechanisation, value addition and training. Both sides agreed to hold follow-up meetings to identify priority areas for cooperation.
The Farmers’ Union described the engagement as “promising”, saying stronger ties with China would help raise productivity and improve food security across the country.
