Ghana’s Parliament approves Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as new Chief Justice

Ghana’s Parliament formally approved Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the new Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana on Thursday, 13 November 2025.

The motion was moved in the House following a report from the Appointments Committee, chaired by MP Bernard Ahiafor, which recommended his confirmation. The motion was seconded by Kweku George Ricketts-Hagan. The approval vote recorded 163 in favour and 69 opposed.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie had served on the Supreme Court since 2008 and was Acting Chief Justice prior to this appointment. His appointment follows the removal of the previous Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, which had sparked significant legal and political controversy.

During the parliamentary vetting process, the minority caucus rejected his nomination and walked out, citing concerns over the process around the former Chief Justice’s dismissal and what they described as procedural irregularities.

With the parliamentary approval secured, the remaining step is for the President to administer the customary oath of office in accordance with Article 144(1) of the 1992 Constitution.
