Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday called for strengthened relations with China, highlighting the need to deepen cooperation across key sectors including security, trade, and counterterrorism.
Speaking during a farewell visit by outgoing Chinese Ambassador Tong Defa, Mahama praised China’s support for Ghana, particularly its role in negotiating the country’s debt restructuring and backing development projects. He also proposed establishing a bilateral payment and settlement system to further facilitate economic cooperation between the two nations.
“China has been a valuable partner in Ghana’s development journey. Strengthening collaboration in trade, industry, mining, and technology will yield mutual benefits for both countries,” Mahama said.
Ambassador Tong, who is completing his tenure in Ghana, commended Mahama for steering the country’s economic recovery during his first year in office. He reaffirmed China’s commitment to Ghana, noting that a zero-tariff arrangement for Ghanaian exports would soon be implemented. Tong also emphasized expanding cooperation in industrial development, scientific research, and technological innovation.
Ghana and China have maintained strong bilateral relations in recent years, with Beijing providing support in infrastructure, debt relief, and trade facilitation. Analysts say deeper ties could help Ghana attract investment, boost exports, and strengthen national capacity in areas such as energy, mining, and industrial manufacturing.
The two leaders agreed that further collaboration in security and counterterrorism would be crucial in addressing regional threats, particularly in West Africa, where several countries continue to face instability from extremist and organized crime networks.
The call for closer ties comes amid Ghana’s broader strategy to diversify its economy, increase exports, and attract foreign investment while maintaining fiscal stability. China is viewed as a key partner in these efforts, given its experience in financing and implementing large-scale development projects across Africa.
