ITMS sets ambitious target of 1 million new number plates in 2026

Uganda’s Intelligent Transport Monitoring System (ITMS), in partnership with Spiro Uganda, celebrated the issuance of its 200,026th new number plate at a ceremony held at the Spiro Bond Site in Kampala. The milestone highlights growing public confidence in the country’s upgraded vehicle registration system.

The ceremony recognized a boda rider who received the 200,026th plate, presenting him with branded gifts. The rider praised the improved turnaround time and quality of service, stating that the new number plate provided a greater sense of protection and legitimacy.

Bruce Mucunguzi, Spiro Uganda Country Head, emphasized the commitment to a secure, efficient, and transparent registration process that meets regulatory requirements while prioritizing customer needs. In coordination with the Ministry of Works and Transport, ITMS has accelerated installation processes to minimize downtime, resolving registration queries in under 24 hours.

Joseph Tumwine, ITMS Head of Installations, noted that 83% of planned installations were completed on schedule and announced an ambitious production goal of one million new number plates for 2026. The new Kyambogo-based factory, currently employing 300 Ugandan staff, will enhance domestic capacity, producing up to 2,500 plates per shift.

Officials highlighted that the initiative reflects ITMS’s dedication to supporting a growing local market by providing durable, domestically manufactured number plates and ensuring a seamless registration experience for all motorists.
