The 2025 Speedtest Global Index by Ookla shows that Kenya remains a key force in the Sub-Saharan Africa telecommunications landscape. Despite intensifying competition and the rapid rollout of 5G networks across North Africa, Kenya has maintained its position within the global top 100 for mobile internet speeds.
The ranking reflects sustained infrastructure investment, expanding fiber networks, and rising consumer demand for high-speed connectivity. Kenya’s telecom operators continue to modernize networks to support data-heavy services, digital payments, streaming platforms, and cloud-based business tools.
Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates secured second place globally in fixed broadband speeds, reinforcing its status as one of the world’s most advanced digital economies. The UAE’s strong performance highlights the widening infrastructure gap between leading global markets and much of Sub-Saharan Africa.

For Kenya, holding steady in global rankings signals resilience. While 5G adoption in parts of Africa is accelerating, Kenya’s balanced expansion of 4G and fiber connectivity has kept its digital ecosystem competitive. The country’s growing tech startup scene, mobile money dominance, and expanding digital services sector continue to anchor its position as East Africa’s connectivity hub.
As data consumption climbs and governments push digital transformation agendas, sustained investment in spectrum allocation, fiber backbone expansion, and rural connectivity will determine whether Kenya can move beyond stability and climb further up the global speed rankings.
