More than 1,000 Amazon workers warn rapid AI rollout threatens jobs and climate

More than 1,000 Amazon employees have issued a stark warning to the company’s leadership, accusing it of pushing artificial intelligence at “warp speed” with little regard for the consequences on workers, democracy, and the environment.

In an anonymously signed open letter published Wednesday, the employees said Amazon’s aggressive AI expansion is already driving layoffs, intensifying workplace pressure, and contributing to rising emissions. The warning follows the company’s recent announcement of large-scale job cuts tied to deeper automation across its operations.

The letter argues that Amazon’s “all-costs justified” approach risks undermining labour rights and could place society at risk if AI systems are deployed without strong safeguards. Workers are also calling for greater transparency, stronger environmental commitments, and a slowdown in the deployment of AI tools until proper protections are put in place.
