Passenger traffic at Morocco’s main airports surged to record levels in the days leading up to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, underscoring the country’s growing role as a regional aviation hub and host of major international events.
Between December 8 and 18, Morocco’s six AFCON host airports handled 868,287 passengers, a 10.7 percent increase compared with the same period last year, according to figures released by the National Airports Office.
Traffic peaked on December 18, which marked the busiest day ever recorded in terms of passenger volumes and operational activity, the airports authority said.
Over the 10-day period, the airports managed 7,327 aircraft movements, up 13 percent year on year, reflecting strong demand linked to the upcoming continental football tournament.
Casablanca Mohammed V Airport remained the country’s main gateway, accounting for 292,221 passengers, or 33.7 percent of total traffic recorded at the host airports. The performance highlights the strategic role of the Casablanca hub in supporting logistics for the Africa Cup of Nations.
Other host cities including Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier, Rabat and Fez also recorded notable growth, driven by the arrival of supporters, official delegations and international visitors.
The airports authority said the surge was handled smoothly thanks to the full mobilisation of airport teams and close coordination with public institutions, including the Interior Ministry, security services, customs authorities and the Ministry of Transport and Logistics.
Measures were put in place to streamline passenger flows, strengthen security checks and ensure efficient processing from arrival to exit, it added.
Beyond the headline figures, the record traffic has served as a full-scale operational test ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations, reinforcing Morocco’s capacity to host and manage major international sporting events.
Morocco is set to host the 2025 AFCON later this month, welcoming teams, officials and fans from across the continent for one of Africa’s most high-profile football tournaments.
