Nigeria dominates US crude imports with $2.57bn supply surge

Nigeria has strengthened its position as America’s top African crude supplier, shipping $2.57bn worth of oil to the United States between January and August 2025. Fresh data from the US Census Bureau shows Nigeria accounted for 55% of all African crude imported into the US during the period, a commanding lead that no other African nation came close to matching.

The figures translate to 33.23 million barrels out of the continent’s total 60.75 million barrels delivered to US ports. That means more than one in every two barrels of African crude entering the US originated from Nigeria.

Angola, Libya, Ghana, and other exporters trailed far behind, showing Nigeria’s dominance in the transatlantic crude market and its deepening energy ties with Washington at a time when global supply patterns remain volatile.
