Organic farming touted as path to new markets

Tanzania’s agricultural sector is facing a major shift as global and local consumers increasingly demand chemical-free(organic) produce, pushing farmers to consider organic farming as a gateway to higher-value markets. Industry experts say this shift could unlock new export opportunities, boost farmer earnings, and strengthen Tanzania’s position in regional food supply chains.

Officials argue that adopting organic standards will allow farmers to tap into rapidly growing international markets, especially in Europe and parts of Asia, where demand for clean, traceable, and sustainably grown food is rising sharply. Organic products often command premium prices, a crucial advantage for smallholders who face fluctuating returns from conventional farming.

Agricultural analysts note that Tanzanian farmers who transition to organic methods could also benefit from reduced long-term production costs, improved soil health, and stronger resilience to climate shocks. However, the transition remains slow due to certification expenses, limited technical training, and a lack of structured support systems.

Tanzania’s agricultural production and organic farming

Governments and development partners are being urged to scale up investment in training, certification schemes, and market linkages to accelerate organic adoption nationwide. With global buyers increasingly prioritizing sustainably sourced crops, organic farming is being positioned as a strategic path for Tanzania to expand its agricultural footprint and remain competitive in the evolving food marketplace.
