Pinterest to cut nearly 15% of workforce as it pivots aggressively toward AI

Pinterest has announced plans to lay off less than 15% of its global workforce as the social media company accelerates a strategic shift toward artificial intelligence and restructures its teams and operations.

In a regulatory filing released on Tuesday, the company said the job cuts are part of a broader effort to realign resources around AI-driven products and roles, while also reducing its physical office footprint. Pinterest expects the restructuring to be completed by the end of the third quarter of 2026, around late September.

The move signals a deeper pivot toward automation and machine-learning capabilities as Pinterest competes with larger tech platforms increasingly embedding AI into content discovery, advertising optimisation and user engagement tools. Management said the layoffs would enable the company to “invest more effectively in priority areas,” particularly AI engineering, data science and platform efficiency.

Despite the long-term strategic framing, the announcement unsettled investors. Pinterest shares fell by about 3% in premarket trading, reflecting broader market sensitivity to workforce reductions across the tech sector, even when linked to growth narratives around artificial intelligence.

The layoffs also come amid a wider industry trend. Major technology firms have spent the past two years trimming headcount while simultaneously ramping up spending on AI infrastructure and talent, often replacing traditional roles with highly specialised technical positions. For Pinterest, the changes suggest a shift away from legacy team structures toward smaller, more AI-centric units focused on scalability and automation.

While the company did not disclose the exact number of employees affected, Pinterest had roughly 4,700 workers globally as of its last reported headcount, meaning several hundred roles could be eliminated. The company said it would incur restructuring-related costs but expects savings from lower operating expenses and reduced office space over time.

Pinterest’s decision depicts a growing reality in the tech industry: AI adoption is not only reshaping products, but also redefining who gets hired, retained, or let go, as companies recalibrate for a more automated, efficiency-driven future.
