Russia praises new US security strategy as aligning with its global vision

Moscow has publicly welcomed the United States’ newly released national security strategy under President Donald Trump, saying the doctrine reflects a geopolitical outlook far closer to Russia’s own.

The Kremlin praised the document for its sharper, more transactional language and for avoiding the framing of Russia as a strategic threat, something that has long been a fixture of past U.S. security doctrines. Instead, the strategy emphasises great-power cooperation in select areas and prioritises domestic resilience over overseas confrontation.

Kremlin officials said the stance “acknowledges reality” and creates space for a more pragmatic relationship between Washington and Moscow, even as global tensions remain high on issues such as Ukraine, cybersecurity and military competition.

Analysts note that the strategy also signals a divergence from traditional U.S. foreign policy thinking, which for decades positioned Russia as a rival power requiring active containment. The new approach aligns with Trump’s broader view of reducing entanglements abroad, recalibrating alliances and placing American economic and security interests above ideological commitments.

While Moscow is celebrating the shift, critics in Washington warn that the softened posture toward Russia could weaken U.S. leverage in future negotiations and embolden the Kremlin’s assertive foreign policy.
