South Africa’s GDP growth slows to 0.5% in Q3, matching forecasts

South Africa’s economy expanded by 0.5 percent in the third quarter of 2025, easing from a revised 0.9 percent in the previous quarter, official data showed on Tuesday.

The seasonally adjusted quarter-on-quarter figure was in line with the median forecast in a Reuters poll.

Nine of the 10 sectors monitored by Statistics South Africa posted higher output, with mining and agriculture leading gains, while electricity, gas and water declined.

Africa’s most industrialised economy has struggled to gain traction, with annual growth averaging below 1 percent over the past decade. The National Treasury sees a modest recovery ahead, projecting GDP growth of 1.2 percent in 2025 and 1.5 percent in 2026.

Year-on-year, third-quarter GDP rose 2.1 percent, beating economists’ expectations for a 1.8 perecnt increase.
