Stellantis recalls 700,000 vehicles globally over fire risk

Stellantis, the Franco-Italian-American automotive giant, confirmed on Wednesday the global recall of around 700,000 vehicles after identifying a defect that could lead to engine fires, the company said.

The recall follows 36 reported incidents, including 12 fires, prompting regulators and Stellantis to act swiftly to protect customer safety. Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) issued formal notices on Tuesday, warning that vehicles manufactured between 2023 and 2026 should be inspected for a defect allowing water to enter the engine compartment, creating a potential fire hazard.

In a statement, Stellantis emphasized that “customer safety is at the core of our values” and said the issue can be resolved with a free service taking roughly 30 minutes. The fix involves installing a larger protective cap to prevent sparks between the particle filler hose and the starter terminal’s protective cap, particularly in small hybrid vehicles where the thermal engine and electric motor are closely positioned.

The recall spans several of Stellantis’s major brands, including Peugeot, Citroën, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, and Jeep. KBA specified affected models and quantities: 295,000 Peugeot 208 and 2008, 126,000 Citroën C3, C4, and C3 Aircross, 124,000 Fiat Grande Panda, 44,000 Alfa Romeo Junior, and 88,000 Jeep Avenger. Analysts noted that small hybrid vehicles appear most vulnerable due to design proximity between engine components.

“This is a technical issue with a clear resolution, but it underscores the ongoing challenges in hybrid vehicle design where high-voltage components are paired with traditional thermal engines,” said an automotive safety expert.

Stellantis has faced a string of recalls in recent years. The company dealt with massive global recalls related to Takata airbags and PureTech engine issues, both of which caused reputational and financial strain. Earlier in 2026, the group took substantial financial charges after overestimating demand for electric vehicles, highlighting operational pressures during the transition toward electrification.

Despite these setbacks, Stellantis remains committed to addressing safety issues promptly. The company reassured customers that affected vehicles could be safely repaired without extended downtime. Dealers worldwide have been mobilized to carry out inspections and install protective caps, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.

The timing of the recall comes amid rising scrutiny of hybrid and electric vehicle safety standards, as manufacturers navigate increasingly complex powertrains combining combustion engines with electric motors. Regulators in Europe, the United States, and Asia have intensified monitoring, requiring companies to report potential safety issues promptly and implement preventive measures.

Industry analysts said the recall could affect Stellantis’s production and delivery schedules temporarily, but the company’s broad dealer network and rapid response capacity are expected to mitigate longer-term impacts on customer confidence. “While the volume is significant, Stellantis’s proactive handling helps maintain trust in its brands,” said a European automotive analyst.

The recall also highlights broader challenges facing the automotive industry during the shift to hybrid and electric mobility. As manufacturers integrate multiple power sources, close attention to component placement, thermal management, and electrical safety becomes critical. “Incidents like this remind the industry that hybrid vehicles, while environmentally promising, carry unique engineering risks that require constant oversight,” the analyst added.

Stellantis continues to monitor reports from the field and work closely with regulators to ensure all affected vehicles are addressed promptly. The company urged customers owning the listed models to schedule a service appointment immediately.
