Togo crop exports slump in Q3 2025 as livestock sector recovers

Togo’s crop exports fell sharply in the third quarter of 2025, with official data from INSEED showing a total value of 5.83 billion CFA francs, down from 18.89 billion CFA francs in the previous quarter. The decline follows two consecutive quarters of strong performance and is attributed to seasonal factors, supply constraints, and regional market demand fluctuations. On a year-on-year basis, crop exports also dropped compared with 6.67 billion CFA francs in Q3 2024.

In contrast, livestock and animal product exports showed strong growth, reaching 5.02 billion CFA francs, up from 3.12 billion CFA francs in Q2 2025 and slightly higher than 4.20 billion CFA francs in Q3 2024. This improvement indicates a gradual recovery in the animal sector.

Agriculture remains a pillar of Togo’s economy, contributing about 40% of GDP and employing nearly 70% of the workforce. Despite export activity, domestic production is insufficient to meet local demand, resulting in high import levels. Crop imports totaled 29.65 billion CFA francs, nearly six times the value of crop exports, while animal product imports reached 17.39 billion CFA francs, over three times the value of livestock exports.

These figures highlight a structural trade deficit in both crop and livestock sectors, underscoring the challenges Togo faces in balancing domestic consumption with export potential.
