UN orders investigation into alleged atrocities in Sudan’s Al-Fashir

The United Nations has called for an urgent probe into reports of atrocities in the Sudanese city of Al-Fashir, amid growing concern over escalating violence and human rights violations in the region.

The UN resolution mandates an investigative team to gather evidence of alleged abuses and, where possible, identify suspected perpetrators to ensure accountability for violations under international law. The resolution emphasises that impunity must not prevail and underscores the international community’s commitment to protecting civilians in conflict zones.

Reports from human rights organisations and local sources indicate that recent clashes between armed groups and government forces in Darfur, particularly in Al-Fashir, have led to civilian casualties, forced displacements, and widespread destruction of property. Aid agencies have expressed alarm over restricted access to humanitarian corridors, complicating relief operations.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) noted that thousands of families have been uprooted from their homes and are in urgent need of shelter, medical aid, and food assistance. The situation mirrors a pattern of recurring violence in Darfur since the conflict’s onset in 2003, which has left hundreds of thousands dead and millions displaced.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted the critical importance of accountability in preventing further atrocities. “The people of Darfur have suffered far too long. Investigating these allegations is vital to ensuring justice and deterring future violations,” he said. The investigative team is expected to work closely with Sudanese authorities, local civil society groups, and international human rights bodies to document evidence comprehensively.

International observers have warned that unless urgent diplomatic and humanitarian interventions are deployed, the situation in Al-Fashir could exacerbate regional instability, including spillover into neighbouring Chad, the Central African Republic, and South Sudan. The UN resolution also calls on member states to support the probe, provide resources, and facilitate safe access for investigators to conflict-affected areas.
