The United States has announced a US$150 million plan to massively scale up drone deliveries of blood, vaccines and other medical supplies across Africa, in a push officials say could triple the reach of existing services and speed lifesaving care to millions.
The funding, channelled through the State Department, will support an expanded partnership with US-based drone logistics firm Zipline. Officials said the initiative aims to boost the number of African hospitals and clinics served by Zipline from about 5,000 to 15,000.
If fully implemented, they said, the program could give as many as 130 million people near-instant access to blood products and essential medicines. It is also expected to create up to 1,000 jobs in the United States, alongside new operations roles in participating African countries.
