The Winooski School District, known for its diverse student population, hoisted the flag as a show of solidarity with Somali families and to affirm the district’s commitment to inclusion. The gesture sparked backlash almost immediately, with district officials confirming they received multiple threats following the display.
Superintendent leaders said the district would not be intimidated and stressed that the flag-raising was meant to support students who felt targeted by national rhetoric. Local authorities have been notified, and security around school facilities has been strengthened as investigations continue.
Community organisations across Vermont have since expressed support for Winooski’s stance, calling the threats “unacceptable” and urging continued efforts to protect minority groups within educational spaces.
