X is developing a new feature dubbed “smart cashtags” that will automatically turn ticker symbols in posts into interactive links showing real-time prices and asset-specific information for cryptocurrencies and stocks.
According to details reported by Decrypt, the feature is designed to recognise cashtags such as $BTC, $ETH, or $TSLA and convert them into clickable links that lead users to live pricing data, charts and broader market context. This would mark a significant upgrade from the platform’s current cashtag system, which mainly aggregates posts around a specific ticker without providing direct financial data.
The move aligns with X owner Elon Musk’s broader ambition to transform the platform into an “everything app,” integrating payments, finance and real-time information into everyday social media use. Financial discussions already thrive on X, particularly around crypto markets, meme stocks and macroeconomic trends, making the platform a natural hub for real-time market commentary.

Smart cashtags could deepen user engagement by allowing traders, analysts and casual users to instantly check prices without leaving the app. For crypto assets, the feature is expected to pull live data from market feeds, while stock tickers would link to up-to-date pricing and performance metrics during trading hours.
The development also signals X’s growing interest in financial services. The company has been steadily expanding into payments and digital finance, with expectations that tighter integration of market data could support future trading, tipping or payment features within the app.
Industry observers say the feature could further blur the line between social media and financial platforms, positioning X as a real-time information layer for markets. However, it also raises questions around data accuracy, market sensitivity and regulatory oversight, especially given the platform’s influence on investor sentiment.

While there is no confirmed rollout date, smart cashtags are already being tested internally. If launched broadly, the feature could reshape how market conversations happen online, turning every ticker mention into a live gateway to financial data.
