China-France: Xi pushes for deeper cooperation as Macron lands in Beijing

Chinese President Xi Jinping is calling for stronger strategic cooperation between China and France as global tensions and economic shocks continue to reshape international alliances. His message came as French President Emmanuel Macron touched down in Beijing on Wednesday for a three-day state visit, marking another push by Paris to keep diplomatic and economic channels with China open despite Western pressure.

Macron’s visit, his latest since tensions rose over trade policy, Russia’s war in Ukraine and Indo-Pacific security, signals France’s attempt to position itself as a bridge between China and the wider European Union. Beijing, meanwhile, wants Europe to maintain independence in global affairs and resist becoming fully aligned with Washington’s containment strategy.

Xi framed the moment as one requiring “closer dialogue and practical cooperation” in order to stabilize global supply chains, boost economic recovery, and manage geopolitical risks. The visit is expected to cover trade issues, climate commitments, China-EU relations, and Macron’s push for de-escalation in global conflict zones.

France continues to balance its concerns over China’s growing global influence with the economic opportunities the Chinese market offers, especially for aviation, agriculture, and luxury sectors.
